description This paper aims to explore two different forms of authorial self-reflection and self-representation as they are practiced in two recent German novels : Marlene Streeruwitz’s much-discussed novel Nachkommen and Thomas Brussig’s latest work Das gibts in keinem Russenfilm namely attempt to offer a new kind of writer’s self-representation by unravelling the role that their authors play in the contemporary literary field. On the basis of a few examples from the texts, the paper will show how the two novels indeed enact two distinct forms of self-staging, both presenting a fictional Doppelgänger of the writer and reflecting, more critically, on the way she or he are perceived as authors of literary works. Finally, this study shows that—by shaping a new image of the two writers and their authorship that goes beyond all the labels and evaluations ascribed to them by the critics—this particular way of self-staging also aims at bolstering (Streeruwitz) or deconstructing (Brussig) the role that these specific authors play in the literary field.
