Summary: | The history of the geographical centralisation of industrial capital in São Paulo can be traced back to the crisis of the coffee economy. This stage is important because it marks the beginning of a movement to nationalise the Brazilian economy. Firstly, it was the use of an urban structure inherited from the previous period that supported the growth of industrial capital from São Paulo, which, after using the local market stocks left by the export economy, entered the markets of other regional economies. Secondly, as the movement towards economic integration became the very process of nationalisation of São Paulo's industrial economy, the expansion of markets had to be guaranteed by large doses of political intervention, involving the Brazilian state in the promotion of territorially extended urbanisation. Thus, the first chapters of this geographical centralisation of capital were, on the one hand, the capture and extraction of the dynamics of regional economies and, on the other, the imposition of an urban-industrial social and economic dynamic on the rest of the territory. The concentration of financial capital flows and foreign investment seems to have followed this asymmetrical territorial conformation and characterises the latest phase of this economic hegemony. The aim of this article is to present a reading of the economic hegemony of the state of São Paulo within the framework of the national economy, based on the history of urbanisation and investment linked to the material production of the Brazilian territory. |
