Summary:The trafficking of West Indian laborers to cane plantations in Cuba was used by American monopolies at the beginning of the 20th century to increase sugar production. This article, based on information obtained from the archives of the United Fruit Company in Cuba, describes and analyzes the massive presence of Haitian and English-speaking Caribbean workers on the lands of this and similar US companies on the island. The article recounts the pressure exerted by UFC on Cuban governments to satisfy its appetite for profit and profitability.
