| description | Management of patients with severely atrophic maxilla has long been a treatment challenge for our specialty. The advent of zygomatic implants in 1988 by Branemark led to an alternative treatment modality for patients with maxillary defects and those with severely resorbed alveolar ridges. Over the past two decades, several implant and treatment advances have been made to improve treatment planning placement, and restoration of the severely atrophic maxilla, making zygomatic implants a first-line treatment option in these situations.
This treatment option allows delivering immediate fixed teeth within 24 hours. Numerous peer-reviewed publications have reported different success rates, resulting in a disagreement on the topic. Therefore, the overall efficacy and predictability of this rehabilitation is still a matter of discussion. With this study, we aimed to identify the published literature on the use of zygomatic implants for the reconstruction of the severely atrophic maxilla and report the cumulative success rate (CSR) as a function of follow- up. |
