description The present paper is part of a larger project, whose ambition is to clarify the natural foundations of a theory of meaning. In such a theory, two separate processes are to be distinguished: anasemiosis and catasemiosis. In the course of the first, several mechanisms are producing meaning, in result of the multiple interactions between the living organisms and the stimulations emanating from the outside world. However we will concentrate on the second process, in which the meaning allows – or even produces – an action upon the world (including a material action modifying the latter). Now the action on the world by means of signs is the field of pragmatics (after being that of rhetoric). In our contribution, we will confront the classical views of pragmatics to those resulting from our physicalist approach of catasemiosis.
