description | The number of female academics who are in the first steps of their academic career in the departments of International Relations/Political Science and International Relations in Turkish universities are relatively high, but there is a considerable gender inequality with regard to getting the title of professorship. This article analyses female academics’ perceptions of working environments and career opportunities in these departments from the perspective of gender. The article is based on 58 semi-structured interviews held with female academics in 22 different cities from seven regions in Turkey. How do patriarchal codes, discourses and practices affect the working environment of those academics? What kind of visible and invisible obstacles do female scholars face and how do they deal with them? What kind of differences are there between the universities in the three biggest Turkish cities and in others in terms of working environment? How do glass ceilings, ivory basements and maternal walls affect female academics? This study aims to answer these questions. |
