Description
Summary:At the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century, Italians living in Egypt founded a large number of associations of various kinds, including political, military, recreational, cultural, athletic, and charitable organizations. This article analyses the organization and function of two secular associations established by Italians in Cairo, each of which engaged in charitable works: the Società dei reduci delle patrie battaglie (Society of Veterans of the Wars of Italian Independence) and the Società italiana di beneficenza (Italian Charity Society). By studying archival materials alongside the statutes of the associations themselves, the article sheds new light on forms of charitable organization that to a large extent remain obscure in modern research, due to the ephemeral nature of their activities.
