Description
Summary:In Palestine, “cemeteries of numbers” refer to these places in Israel where, since the 1960s, bodies of fighters and those who committed attacks are retained as bargaining chips or as a punishment. They are perceived in Palestinian society as prisoners whose liberation is hoped for, in an economy of war and occupation. The modalities of their retention and restitution has changed according to the periods of the conflict, to political issues or more individual considerations. Recently, strengthened collective action of families and Palestinian and Israeli civil society has resulted in the fragmented returns of some of these bodies in Jerusalem and the West Bank.
