The outbreak of the war, in 1940, was therefore the moment of truth for the war culture advocated by the fascist power. And yet the setbacks and the Italian society’s gradual distancing from the regime showed the limits of the official views on war culture and, eventually, the political inability of fascism to create a « new man » who could face the challenge of the conflict.
