description | Between 1976 and 1982, many of those groups and organizations committed to women’s rights in Rennes worked together to create an information centre dedicated to women. Both the national and local socio-political contexts favoured this initiative. The development of CIFs (Centre d’information féminin) nationwide since 1972 offered the possibility of joining a larger network of information centres. The local voluntary sector in Rennes, assisted by successive town councils, also provided valuable support for the women decided to become involved in this project. In this context, this group of women twice had to make decisions with regards to the different possibilities on offer, first at the inception of the project, when the question arose of whether to turn their group into a CIF, and then again, from 1981 onwards, on whether to become a CIDF (Centre d’information des droits des femmes). Many factors encouraged this organisation to finally take the second option and to join an governmental association for the rights of women. After presenting the origins of this collective project, and how it became possible to imagine its institutionalisation, this article then analyses the role played by the town council, before finally exploring the successive stances and choices that led to the institutionalisation of the CRIF. |
