| description | The Albret in the Lot-et-Garonne department and the towns of the Aspres and the Albères in the Pyrénées-Orientales have been since 1850, with the Var and the Landes, the leading centres of production of corks for bottles. Since the 1960s, the industry in the Lot-et-Garonne has declined in the face of developing competition from plastic bottle stoppers and on account of the loss of cork oak resources in North Africa. Then the local cork producers created their museum in the Lot-et-Garonne, a structure based on the heritage of cork production taking the industrial aspects of this production as its main object. In the Pyrénées-Orientales, on the other hand, things have taken a different turn. The production of corks for bottles is still active and also developing an interest in its heritage aspects. For economic and technical reasons, the Mediterranean Cork Institute, founded at the beginning of the 1990s in order to preserve the cork oak forests, has sought new commercial outlets and now emerges as a ‘heritage-producing machine’. Abandoning the workshops, its attention is now concentrated on the forest. This article sets out to analyse the reasons for this choice of heritage and the means employed to support it. |
