Description
Summary:This article aims to revisit the Epicurean challenge to the link between the society and religion, in favor of a radical perspective: rather than being necessary for the proper functioning of society, belief in divine intervention appears, on the contrary, as an instigator of social violence. The study is based on the texts of Lucretius, a 1st century BCE Epicurean poet, and on the monumental inscription of Diogenes of Oenoanda, dated to the 2nd century CE, to understand the reasons—sometimes political—behind the development of this thought.
