Description
Summary:The urban restructuring in Resende and Volta Redonda has led to processes of redefinition of the centrality and alteration of space practices, with the distinguished presence of shopping malls, closed condominiums and walled allotments, configuring them as polycentric and fragmented cities. Based on interviews, mappings and secondary sources, we found two distinct patterns in the relation between self-segregation and the new areas of centrality. In Resende, due to its extensive urban territorial dimension and population size reduced, there is a separation of the location area of Shopping mall - a new area of centrality - in relation to the location of the elitist closed allotments and condominiums, while in Volta Redonda, as it has a more complex pattern of urban structure, an overlap of the new centrality with the location of the walled allotments and closed condominiums is identified, a fact that evidences a clear process of fragmentation of the urban fabric.
