Summary:In order to decrease the timing gear whines of diesel engines, a dynamical analysis model of timing gear system is constructed, considering the influence of the elastic characteristics of the support end of the engine block. Based on the analytical model, the transmission error, contact pattern and vibration response are investigated. The NVH bench test is carried out, and the measured data present the consistency between the simulation and the experiment. The gear modification is proposed considering the influence of the light load on multiple gear meshing pairs. The optimization of gear modification is put into effect and the experiment data show that this modification method can reduce the gear whine by controlling the convex curve on top profile, concave at center gear surface and tooth flank waviness.
