Description
Summary:Internationalization has now become a strategic priority for higher education institutions and educational policies (Beacco et al., 2022; Cosnefroy et al., 2020; Beacco, 2019; Harfi and Mathieu, 2006). However, in Europe, the implementation of this governance strategy has taken such a wide variety of forms in recent history that it is now reasonable to question its meaning (Knight, 2004).In order to clarify this matter, this study seeks to characterize what the expression « Internationalization in Higher Education » actually means in the current context by looking into the internationalization strategies and initiatives implemented by international actors of a new kind : European University Alliances (EUAs).To do this, a quantitative and qualitative analysis of the factsheets of the 17 EUAs which were selected under a call for projects launched by the European Commission in 2019 was conducted. The results reveal that, in EUAs, (i) the internationalization policies are mainly articulated around four key focuses, (ii) that these axes allow to roll out a broad range of internationalization-related initiatives (iii) and that these seemingly different initiatives actually serve a common purpose : fostering social progress in Europe.
