description | Security is an interdisciplinary field of study that produces a wealth of information daily from a broadening perspective. Concurrently, the volume of related research is on the rise. This prompts an essential inquiry: “Can security studies be regarded as a distinct discipline?” In this context, the article examines the current state of security studies in Türkiye, evaluating its standing as a discipline based on scientific criteria. Security studies are analyzed in terms of their established literature, the formulation of specific research questions and methodologies, their incorporation into educational programs, the development of an academic community, and the processes of institutionalization and academic organization. In this regard, the article reviews graduate-level research conducted in Türkiye within the field of security to assess its disciplinary status. Additionally, it considers the efforts of the Interuniversity Council (ÜAK) and the Council of Higher Education (YÖK) in evaluating security as a scientific domain, along with analyses of educational classifications under the Turkish Higher Education Qualifications Framework (TYYÇ). Ultimately, the article presents recommendations for categorizing security studies as a scientific field and for enhancing its organizational structure at the academic level. |
