description | Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is a complex and debilitating condition characterized by high blood pressure in the arteries of the lungs. PH is a progressive disease that can lead to severe complications and reduced quality of life for affected individuals. It poses significant challenges to patients and health-care systems worldwide, including Nigeria. Despite its global impact, there is limited research specifically focused on PH in Nigeria. This literature review aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the epidemiology, burden, etiology, clinical features, evaluation, management, and challenges associated with treating patients with PH in Nigeria. A comprehensive literature review was conducted to gather relevant studies and articles on PH in Nigeria. Various databases such as PubMed, Google Scholar, and African Journals Online were searched using keywords such as “pulmonary hypertension,” “Nigeria,” “epidemiology,” “clinical features,” “management,” and “challenges.” The inclusion criteria for selecting studies will include those published within the last 10 years that focus on PH in Nigeria. According to our findings, the burden of PH in Nigeria is significant. The etiology of PH can vary and may include factors such as genetic predisposition, underlying medical conditions such as heart or lung diseases, or exposure to certain drugs or toxins. Symptoms may include shortness of breath, fatigue, chest pain or discomfort, dizziness, or fainting spells. However, these symptoms can be nonspecific and overlap with other conditions. Our review found limited evidence on specific treatment options available within the country. The current clinical management typically focuses on symptom management and optimizing supportive care. The challenges encountered in the management of pulmonary hypersensitivity pneumonitis in Nigeria include limited access to specialized health-care facilities, lack of awareness among health-care professionals and the general population, inadequate diagnostic tools and resources, and financial constraints. Our study provides valuable insights into the epidemiology, burden, etiology, clinical features, evaluation, management, and challenges faced when treating patients with PH in Nigeria. These findings emphasize the urgent need for targeted interventions and improved health-care infrastructure to address the growing burden of PH in Nigeria. |
