description | As a consultant responding to requests about impacts on employees’ mental health, the author wonders about a recurrent paradox of these situations: employees who claim to be generally satisfied about the reduction in working time also state that "since a 35-hour week was implemented, things haven’t been going well." Far from any attempt to evaluate the effects of a reduction in working time on working conditions, she attempts to solve this enigma by articulating the psychodynamic approach to work, the history of regulations and media images, and a synthesis analysis of her interventions. She gradually paints a defensive vicious circle of thought and action paralysis and the harmful loss of self-esteem. The reduction in working time may not be the cause of the deterioration in mental health; it may correspond to the representative instant in the involuntary but not unconscious commitment of employees, unions and policies in maintaining the system that they criticize: by accepting to line up under the banner of the stereotypes of economic fatality, of the commercial "war" and of work evaluation management criteria, they have eliminated the problem of conflicts of interest, ethical and technical confrontations about daily work practices, but they have also lost the anchor for subverting the requirements; they have to bear the doubt and guilt alone. Hence a collective and individual shift of the action towards recognition of "suffering", condemnation of the "harassers", and the psychological care of the "victims". The health issue is to return to the social conflictuality register and to restore the collective capacity to think about the "work". |
