description Throughout history, women have been a driving force behind numerous changes in the political, social, economic, and cultural spheres. In this context, during the reign of Mohammad Reza Shah (the second Pahlavi period), the actions and policies of the government were both beneficial and detrimental to the role and status of women. From this perspective, the present article adopts a descriptive-analytical approach to address the question: What were the achievements and obstacles in terms of women's role and status in economic development during the era of Mohammad Reza Shah, especially after the White Revolution?  The findings of the research indicate the following: first, Mohammad Reza Shah made efforts to increase women's participation in the economic field through his modernization policies. Secondly, the modernization initiatives of the Pahlavi regime enabled women to make significant progress — especially in terms of economic growth and development. This progress was reflected in the economic independence of women, increased access to education and improved employment opportunities. Thirdly, it is demonstrated that Mohammad Reza Shah’s centralized and patriarchal style of governance had a negative impact on the social role and status of women. Factors such as the promotion of a Western lifestyle, disregard for traditional and dominant social values, gender discrimination, a gap between rhetoric and practice regarding women, superficial modernization, neglect of the lower classes of society, and a centralized political power structure led to widespread dissatisfaction among women. This dissatisfaction eventually became one of the driving forces behind the Islamic Revolution.
