Description
Summary:This paper explores the emergence of a sense of presence that learners feel in a virtual reality environment for foreign language learning and its influence on language competence, in particular, on listening comprehension in German as a foreign language. With a user-centered approach, we explain how presence emerges and discuss its potential in terms of learning. For our empirical study on French pupils learning German we developed tools to measure presence and predisposition to presence. From the observation in our study that visual immersion hasn't a significant positive influence on the emergence of the presence and that interaction may have a negative one, we point out the importance of the technical familiarization phase for the learner, because the technical problems encountered during interaction negate the additional benefit of the virtual reality. Our current approach to immersive technologies and preliminary results shall be refined by further studies but nevertheless allow us to consider virtual reality as a tool for technology-mediated language learning.
