description | This paper analyses the political exploitation of the ancient past in Romania through two distinct but complementary case studies. The first one deals with the archaeological excavations carried out on the main square of the city of Cluj-Napoca. Initiated by the far-right mayor, their explicit purpose was to uncover remains from the Roman period. This led to a confrontation between the mayor and members of the city’s Hungarian minority, for whom the site is highly symbolic. The excavations were interrupted several times due to political vicissitudes, and the dispute continued until the late 2000s. The second case focuses on the political circumstances that conduced to the construction, in the small Transylvanian town of Orăștie, at the beginning of this century, of several monuments which have, as a common subject, the pre-Roman past of the region. Our work will examine the different points of view of the stakeholders in order to highlight the political use of ancient history which, in the first case, seeks to link these Roman remains to modern Romanians, thus asserting the anteriority of their presence in Transylvania over the Hungarians and, in the second case, to claim the importance of the Dacian element in the Romanian identity. |
