| Summary: | In 1939, the architectural ensemble of the city of São João Marcos (RJ) was listed on the National Register. In 1940, the tipping was revoked, aiming at the construction of a power dam. The expropriation of property was authorized, the population was removed, and the entire architectural complex was demolished. The lands were flooded; however, the water level of the dam lowered and the ruins of the architectural ensemble became visible. Required to settle down elsewhere, a group of residents kept the local tradition of Folia de Reis. In the 1980s, researchers interested in analyzing social changes resulting from the construction of a highway in the region learned of Folia and recommended that it should be looked into, as the identity expression of a population kept away from their homeland. In 1990, the remaining ruins were listed on the State Register, and this process of tipping is strongly connected with the memory of the demolition. |
