| Summary: | English coordinators AND and OR can be considered as cases of linguistic polyvalence (constructing symmetrical or a-symmetrical relations) and polysemy (mapping a number of semantic notions such as escalation, temporal sequence, consequence, condition etc.). This paper aims at formalizing patterns of meaning construction for the two coordinators, starting from their intrinsic double variability. Paradigms of contextual and situational variables are observed in the way they interact with the coordinators – not to directly map their relational meaning – but to instruct and specify the target of the coordination process. Such targeting instructions are analyzed in a variety of coordinated structures which are interpreted as conceptually symmetrical, non-symmetrical or pseudo-imperative, according to the selection, as the scope of the combining process, of either the level of bare predication within the conjuncts, or their situational determinations or even their assertive modalities. |
