Description
Summary:In this article, we examine the implications of using (or not using) the discursive formula “systemic racism” in a research-intervention project under a diversity management initiative at a Canadian financial institution. To this end, we discuss the term semantic negotiation, defined as a transactional process of relating a signifier to a signified, generating varied and often contradictory meanings, with the aim of influencing interpretations and courses of action in a desired direction. Starting with the research mandate negotiation process, the article shows that semantic negotiation is a strategy used by both the researcher-intervenor and her partners to find common ground on which to pursue the research-intervention project. Compromises on both sides, as well as a ban on the use of potentially controversial terms, lead to a form of neutralization of systemic racism, reinforcing the organizational whiteness of diversity management programs.
