| Summary: | The article tries to put into perspective the differences between the old town of Ṣan‘â’ and its suburbs as regards the evolution and the construction of urban identities. Attitudes and speeches of townsmen were analyzed and enabled to identify the dissimilarities between these two urban entities. In the old town, the traditional « citadinity » tends to crumble because of the intrusion of many external signs. In the suburbs however, a plural identity is emerging, which we observed in the reproduction of traditional socio-spatial devices as well as in the new forms of trade and leisure, which are inspired from the outside. But beyond this distinction between the old town and the suburbs, the urban spread, the fragmentation and the modernization of the city have triggered a great number of urban micro-territories and a proportional multiplication of urban identities. In this context, the areas close to Ṣan‘â’’s gates stands out as the privileged place where these new forms of identity meet and mix. |
