Description
Summary:This study examines the reception of visual communications aimed to counter violence against women, created by the civil society, and using gender disruption strategies (GDS: disturbing gender-based relations). It seeks to provide a better understanding of the reception and the influences of such strategies, through a mediatized form of human and social interactions and a triangulated mixed-method (focus group and “before-after” attitudes measurement protocol). The results show that, in reception: (1) violence is perceived in its collective dimension; education is the more important way to counter this social problem, while notably the law and contemporary feminism represent resistances to change. Characters and violence based in reality constitute specific cues of GDS. (2) Furthermore, the GDS generate a psychological discomfort but a little virtual empathy. Finally, this research shows (3) that GDS significantly decreases hostile and benevolent sexist attitudes.
