| description | When it first appeared in 1996 the Dictionary of South African English on Historical Principles (DSAEHP) intended to reflect the linguistic reality of South African English, a ‘contact language’ spoken as a home language by comparatively few people. Just as English was associated to the antiapartheid struggle and became indispensable at the outset of the democratic era as a lingua franca for political elites, the DSAEHP, crafted within the confines of the progressive Rhodes University, was descended from the antiapartheid posture typical of the local Anglophone liberal intellectuals and was intended to take part in the construction of the new democratic paradigm. The present article seeks to examine the place of this dictionary, a historically constituted object, in South African lexicography, how it renders the specificities of South African English, the peculiar world view it offers and its role as a symbolic tool reflecting the aspirations and prejudices of its authors. |
