description This article draws upon two struggles led by student activists in which the gender equality advisor acted as an intermediary. It analyses the mechanisms through which the activists became alienated within their own struggles, as the latter were monopolised by their higher education institution. It highlights five mechanisms: positive answers without further action, confiscation of time management, exclusion from the discussion groups, familiarity with the school managers and fear of the result. It suggests several strategies for future student mobilisations. As gender equality missions are mandatory in French universities since 2013, this article questions the effectiveness of these missions once they are “manageralised” in order to serve the school interests, especially when the institution’s priority is the attraction and satisfaction of investors. This case study shows the negative impact of a communication strategy based on a feminist discourse on feminist and LGBTQ+ student activism.
