Summary:The article aims to describe the phenomenon of wiping policy and ways of recovering lost audiovisual content based on the example of the TV series Doctor Who and the activities of its fans. The author recounts the reaction of fans to a letter published in the 1980s which uncovered the BBC’s archival gaps, and the consecutive involvement of the fan community. The author outlines the general context of media archaeology, and focuses on the fan search for lost episodes in the countries that broadcast the series under the license, as well as the activities carried out by the BBC itself.
