Summary: | This article gives a brief history of the "photo-poche" collection, focusing in particular on the cultural and political context that led to its creation in 1982 by Robert Delpire, coinciding with the founding of the CNP (Centre National de la Photographie) and Delpire’s appointment as its head. The books in this collection, with their small format, affordable price, and quality reproductions, were designed as miniature encyclopedias for the general public. While conforming to trends of the time, the books were also in keeping with the Delpire’s instructive editorial tradition, and lent photography an institutional credibility. |
