Description
Summary:Orlando Chirino’s career illustrates the gradual growth of a long marginalized then contained radical left. Trade-union militant since the seventies, Orlando Chirino organized a protesting textile industry. After Hugo Chávez took office, he supported the government against destabilization attempts led by political opposition. He became a national leader of the new trade-union confederation. Dismantling of bureaucratic structures close to the opposition let him rise within the trade-union field. While he was leading the majority movement in the new trade-union confederation, his requests for autonomy towards political authorities made him gradually marginalized. After calling to cast blank vote in the constitutional referendum, the government dismissed him. Then, he came closer to opposition trade-union leaders and created many structures that he is leading. Orlando Chirino's attempt to enter politic field, independently of chavism and opposition proved unsuccessful. This path is full of lessons about Venezuelan trade-union field about polarization of the country and the ability of the government to contain left currents, contrary to other Latin-American countries.
