description The Lives of the Sophists (ca. 230 A.D.), a collection of biographies written by the Greek sophist Philostratus, are a prime source of documentation to study, in the context of the Second Sophistic, the forms and practices of scholarly sociability during the imperial period. Focusing on the relationships between teachers and pupils, this paper aims at investigating the intellectual filiations and traditions which structure the “circle of sophists”, as shaped in the Philostratean model. In its exploratory dimension, this contribution intends to test some notions and tools developed in the field of social network analysis in order to study the relational space described in the textual and narrative content of Philostratus’ work as chronicler and continuator of the Second Sophistic.
