Description
Summary:An analysis of public policies in Argentina under Perón between 1946 and 1955 shows both a strong incentive to practice sports and a sustained intervention for their mass dissemination. In this direction, three informative documentary newsreel films are analyzed: Perón y los Deportes (1951), on the occasion of the First Pan American Games; El Deporte con Perón (1954), made up of images from newsreels that narrated sports successes; and Perón deportista (no date), a newsreel promoting Argentina’s industry and the talents of its President. These three informative documentary works combine archival images of competition film editing with, the rhetoric of the announcer strongly identified with the ruling political party joyful music and party marches. This set of short films can be framed as totalitarian non-fascist transnational propaganda, which included official and unofficial productions, with the aim of disseminating institutionalized sports practice as a piece of work of the government. Defined as political sports documentaries based on some reflections of Roland Barthes, the articulation of cinematographic techniques and body techniques is analyzed as a resource to configure aesthetic and political discourses.
