| description | Energy access is vital for socioeconomic development in rural areas, but challenges persist due to unreliable grid power. There are potential solutions in renewable energy technologies, including biogas, but implementation hurdles remain. The purpose of this paper is to review existing literature on the implementation of biogas technology in rural South Africa with a particular focus on Limpopo Province. To recommend a sustainable integrated approach, secondary data from journals, reports, and conference proceedings were analyzed. Numerous biogas projects have failed, underscoring issues associated with poor project conceptualization and inadequate critical engagement. The uptake of biogas technology remains low despite its benefits in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and enhancing energy security. A reconfigured approach to biogas implementation in rural areas is necessary to increase acceptance and dissemination. As part of South Africa’s broader energy security goals, this review aims to inform policies and strategies that promote sustainable renewable energy development, particularly in Limpopo Province. |
