| Summary: | This article examines the professional and personal life of Marie Butts, an English pedagogue who worked in the socio-educational field in France, Switzerland, and Great Britain. Her mobility was particularly impressive, as she worked as a teacher, translator, author, director of a residential home for working-class girls, and then as General Secretary of the International Bureau of Education in Geneva. Highly committed, she was involved in various social movements, including feminist, pacifist, and Quaker, and engaged in exchanges on a transnational scale. Using a biographical approach based on original institutional and personal sources, this article sheds light on the transnational construction of the field of social work from a women’s and gender history perspective. |
