Description
Summary:Public libraries developed in the mid-nineteenth century to meet the need of the industrial society for more knowledgeable people. The right to have access to information adopted by the United Nations in 1946 strengthened the role of the public library as a main channel for people to get information. Is there still a role for the public library in the information society ? The answer to this question is yes. Just as books, the benefits of the information and communication technologies should be there for everyone. It is of great concern that there is a gap between the information rich and the poor. The public library is an opportunity to bridge this gap. The learning individual, required by the knowledge based global economy will need the public library more than ever to have access both to print and electronic sources.
