Summary: | After the breakout of the revolutionary war of independence in 1810, the Rio de la Plata went through a process of rapid and thorough militarization. This process was meant to follow the lessons of the European military model, but its local implementation proved to be difficult and adaptations were required. In order to explain these difficulties, this paper studies the social representations that formed the core of the local war culture. In particular, this paper deals with the type of personal courage under fire that was expected from infantrymen, cavalrymen, officers and commanders. This analysis will shed light on the distance that separated military text books from actual combat practices. |
