description Objective: To determine if the velocity of the recovery movement in dissociated strabismus is a predictive factor of decompensation. Method: It was a prospective, transversal, descriptive an observational study. It was included all the patients with the diagnosis of congenital monocular esotropia with compensated dissociated strabismus. A complete ophthalmological examination was performed, including searching for dissociated deviation with monocular occlusion and/or Posner maneuver. The velocity of the recovery movement in dissociated strabismus was classified in slow and fast. In all the patients we perform surgical correction of the horizontal deviation. After at least 1 year of follow up, it was observed in which cases the dissociated deviation was decompensated. The statistical analysis was descriptive, averages were used for quantitative variables and Fisher’s exact test; for qualitative variables percentages and simple frequencies were used. Results: There were in total 30 patients, 19 with fast recovery movement and in 11 slow. In 8 of the cases with slow movement the dissociated deviation decompensate, and none in the group of fast recovery (p = 0.03). Conclusions: The velocity of the recovery movement in dissociated strabismus is a predictive factor of decompensation.
