Summary: | The current paper focuses on ms. 11521 from the Romanian National Library containing the full text of a novel entitled Amorven și Zalida, translated from French in 1802 in Moldavia. As little information was available about the origins of the text, we found that it was actually a British novel, Ammorvin and Zallida, written by a low-level writer, Mary Charlton, in 1798. Translated the same year into French, the novel was quite appreciated in its French version which circulated throughout Europe, being finally transposed into Romanian. We have therefore studied the Romanian text in comparison with the French it translated and commented upon the merits and the shortcomings of the translation, underlining the good knowledge of French of the Moldavian scholar but also his poetic talent that added a note of fairy tale to the text. |
