description The aim of the article is to show the difficulty in understanding health in elderly unemployed people. First, it takes a theoretical approach in order to address health as a process and social construct. Second, we address the effects of work on health, and then the effects of unemployment on health. Understanding health of unemployed people can only be done when it is understood that work can have impacts on physical and mental health. As for occupational health, we refer broadly to other work from the standpoint, in our investigation, of the difficulty of comprehending the effects of work for people who are no longer employed. From these contributions, we can go on to the effects of unemployment on mental and physical health. Most studies on unemployment have addressed the health of unemployed people without taking into account the effects that work could cause. By taking the results of these studies by combining them with research on the effects of work on health, a more precise picture of the health of unemployed people can be obtained. Then, to understand the effects of unemployment on health and particularly on mental health, it is important to analyze the value given to work. Through our investigation, we became aware that the place of work in more or less long-term retirement perspectives differs with the family situation. There is not the same resistance to unemployment when you are part of a couple or alone, as when you have children to raise or who have already been raised. The objective here is therefore to develop a chart for reading the health of elderly unemployed people, since it cannot be understood from one isolated moment in their past.
