description Context and background Peri-urban areas, located between urban and rural zones, are crucial in the context of global urbanization, experiencing rapid population growth driven by migration and economic opportunities (Satterthwaite, 2010). However, they face significant challenges, including inadequate planning, poor infrastructure, socio-economic inequalities, and environmental degradation (McGranahan & Satterthwaite, 2003). In response, residents often adopt local planning methods to tailor development to their needs, promoting sustainable growth and community engagement (UN-Habitat, 2016). By integrating local methods and participatory approaches, communities can ensure that development strategies are context-specific while balancing urban expansion with the preservation of agricultural land (Cornwall, 2008; Fischer et al., 2018).   Goal and Objectives: The goal of this study is to explore the effectiveness of local methods in settlement planning and development within peri-urban areas. Specific objectives include: (i) identifying local planning and development methods for human settlements, (ii) examining how local methods influences the planning and development processes, and (iii) contrasting local planning methods with formal planning procedures.   Methodology: This paper drew empirical evidences from Homboza settlements located in peri urban between Dar es salaam and Pwani Region. Mixed approach was adopted in which both, qualitative and quantitative data were collected. Data were collected using official and household interviews, focus group discussions, measurements and observations.   Results: The results shows that peri-urban residents have local methods that enables them to plan their settlements independently. By incorporating these local methods into formal planning processes, comprehensive plans can be developed that meet community needs and are suited to the local context. Consequently, empowering key stakeholders could help reduce the number of encroaching squatters in many peri-urban areas of Tanzania.
