The themes of the medieval text and its structure (it was first oral then written, anonymously transcribed by monks then rewritten by renowned writers) give famous translators and writers the opportunity to feel the tension between the community’s heritage and the singularity of creation. At a different level, Heaney’s different versions of the myth also show how translation is another means of raising the question of authorship and individualism. |
