Description
Summary:Introduction: Studying verbal processes is an important aspect of a neuropsychological assessment and therapy of post-brain infarct patients.Research objective: The aim of this study was to establish the frequency and to determine the effects of verbal fluency disorders depending on the ischaemic focus location.Materials and methods: Eighty of the 128 first-ever ischemic stroke survivors were recruited for the quasi-experimental study. They were later assigned to a group of patients with a suitable location of the infarct: PACI, TACI, LACI, POCI. Subsequently, we categorised infarcts, taking into account the topographic area of the brain, into cortical, subcortical, in regard to the side of the infarct and the number of ischaemic foci. The Verbal Fluency (VF) test was used to assess the speech function. Results: We achieved the greatest improvement in VF in the patients with LACI infarct and the greatest improvement in the VF in patients with cortical-subcortical strokes and with ischaemic changes located in the right hemisphere and in the cerebellum. Conclusions: The location of an infarct has a significant effect of neuropsychological rehabilitation.
