Summary:This article reports on a collaborative relationship between a researcher and students preparing for the French national teacher recruitment exam "CAPES". Within the framework of an activity approach and an ethno-graphic approach, the results describe the analysis of the research activity and in particular the collaborative dimension between the researcher and the students. The presentation of the stages of the investigation highlights the evolution of the students' commitment throughout the scientific investigation and thus the access to the private dimension of the preparation, and finally the way in which the researcher's activity and its methodological tools are gradually inscribed in the strategy of preparation for the competition. This article shows that the existence of scientific enquiry in certain fields is linked to the possibilities it offers participants for their ordinary activities.
