Description
Summary:The contribution aims to study the distinction strategies, regulated by ethnic and social factors, adopted in three sepulchral units of Pontecagnano during the Orientalizing period (8th‑7th centuries BC). The site provides a privileged observation point on mobility and integration issues, which are to the fore in the anthropological and archaeological international debate. Under these premises, this speech aims to examine the incidence of these phenomena in the western cemetery of Pontecagnano, focusing particularly on the inclusion forms and the representation strategies adopted by such components. The incidence of specific indicators in the funerary costumes and pottery will be considered in relation to ritual and spatial organisation. In this way, the paper will seek to highlight the materialisation of the cultural boundaries between the different social components of Pontecagnano in the Orientalizing period. Finally, the contribution raises important methodological issues related to the problematic relationship between ethnicity and material culture, of which we enhance the active role in identity construction and representation, also of an ethnic kind.
