description Oral lichen planus (OLP) manifests as various clinical forms in the oral cavity. Majority of these forms are symptomatic, and it gradually impedes the quality of life in OLP patients. Long-term untreated symptoms of OLP increases the malignant transformation rate. Hence, many studies have investigated and reported the efficacy of various therapeutic agents in managing the clinical symptoms of OLP. For further clarity on the effectiveness of a therapeutic agent, we analyzed systematic reviews (SR) which investigated and compared the efficacy of different pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical agents in relieving the clinical symptoms of OLP. A total of 45 SR was retrieved. Out of which 8 were selected which included the comparison of all possible therapeutic agents for pain reduction and clinical resolution of OLP. The evidence from these SR demonstrated mixed results. There is still insufficient and unreliable evidence to support the superiority of any specific treatment regime with regards to its efficacy in managing the clinical symptoms of OLP. There is even a lack of unanimity regarding the treatment guideline of OLP and further randomized controlled trials (RCTs)are required. It is strongly evident from these SR that all the existing therapeutic interventions are ineffective in treating symptomatic OLP.
