Summary: | This article examines the mobilization of the militants of the French Union for Women’s Suffrage (UFSF) in rural areas during the interwar years, specifically in the département of the Deux-Sèvres (79). The main source material for this study derives from the archives of Cécile Brunschvicg (secretary-general, then president of the UFSF) and Marie-Josèphe Réchard (president of Niort’s group and of Centre-Ouest federation) now held at the Centre for the Archives of Feminism, Angers. Far from being an isolated or apathetic movement, interwar provincial suffragism must be recognised as an important research topic within the history of feminism. By considering engagement for women’s suffrage through a local prism, this article aims to examine how a feminist organisation established itself and took action in provincial France. |
