Summary:The aim of this article is to analyse the evolution of the British model of higher education since 1970 and see the extent to which the neo-liberal model has influenced this evolution. The introduction defines the major concepts underlying the study. The first part deals with the main features of the evolution and reforms of the British university system over the period. The second part recalls the most important characteristics of the Anglo-Saxon economic model of capitalism which may be applied to the study of the higher education system in the United Kingdom. The study concludes that in spite of some financial advantages the marketization process may have on the government’s budget and the export surplus it may create there are definitely some human, social and economic long-term drawbacks within the British model of higher education. The final goal is to help those who use, compare and compile international statistics on higher education to gain a better understanding of the cultural characteristics of the British higher education system.
