description In parallel to the theater activities developped by Jesuits in Portugese America, we find records of many dramatic profane performances in several towns of the Portugese colony. This descriptions have reached us through panegyrical reports printed in Lisbon, where theatrical architecture was one of the most valued elements in the account of the celebration’s magnificence together with the colony’s wealth. This article aims to show how this public festivities were organized and financed, then to analyse the short-lived theatrical architecture described by the panegyrics dealing with the public festivities celebrated in Portugese America during the 18th century.
