Summary:The question of the foreigner is in the heart of the literature and of the modern Arabic society and more particularly those of Egypt of the beginning of the XXth century. The foreign element is actively involved in the work of Mahmûd Taymûr the first Arabic short story writer. This otherness is literary and cultural at first as far as the short story style itself and the stylistic processes that is used is from the western countries’ literature, and particularly from the French author Guy de Maupassant. In his short stories and his travelogue, Taymûr represented the Foreigner, the Westerner, the French or the English, the one who up to there painted the Oriental, the native. The English people are represented as well in the work of Maupassant. The French writer highlights statement that became generalized at that time in France concerning these foreigners. The roles are inverted and it is the gaze of the Egyptian writer on the Westerners who is revealed to us. During all his life and in all his work, Taymûr had constantly been devoted to this Other, the Occidental, who was at the origin of the cultural model which was transposed into his country, and which is since then actively involved in a multicultural society.
